Sir,

Referring to my Despatch No. 406 of 30th. November, I have the honour to inform you that Messrs. E. W. Carpen -ter and I. M. Xavier, Assistant Engineers, have been performing Mr. C. H. Gale's duties since he was appointed to act as Second Assistant Director of Public Works and have been called upon to work considerable overtime in consequence.

I therefore recommend that their cases should

be regarded as special and that they should each be granted a bonus of £8 a month from the date of Mr. H. P. Tooker's retirement until 31st. December, 1912. Mr. Gale's lapsing pay for the period amounts to £52 10 a month.
